Overview

The Department of Laboratory Medicine at ZHUMC provides services of diagnostic tests, and medical training and teaching to patients. Our objective is to provide rapid and reliable medical tests that aid in prompt clinical diagnosis and accurate treatment decisions.

Our department is headed by a clinical pathologist who ensures the smooth running of our laboratory and is responsible for the department’s numerous programs.

The head of the department is available in the laboratory Monday to Friday from 8:00am till 2:00pm, and can be reached on Ext: 3042.

 

Services

The Department of Laboratory Medicine includes six essential sections that cover the majority of routine and special tests ordered by the hospital internally and in outpatient cases.

Phlebotomy

The inpatient phlebotomy service collects samples three times a day from all hospital floors according to physicians’ requests. Specimens can also be received from staff in charge of patients at any time.
The outpatient phlebotomy service receives patients every day except Sunday, from 7:00am till 7:00pm. Patients are instructed for sample collection if needed at the outpatient area. This unit can be reached on Ext: 3041.

Clinical Chemistry/Endocrinology 

This section offers a wide range of laboratory tests, including general chemistry profiling, liver and kidney profiles, protein electrophoresis and quantitation, endocrinology tests, tumor markers and therapeutic drug monitoring.
This section is in service 24/7 and can be reached on Ext: 3045/2047.

Serology

The Serology Section at offers a wide variety of tests that help in the diagnosis of viral and other infectious and non-infectious diseases by detecting antigen and antibody reactions.
Services are offered Monday through Friday from 7:00am till 2:00pm, and Saturdays from 7:00am till 1:00pm. The section can be reached on Ext: 3046.

Clinical Microbiology

The Clinical and Microbiology Section is on service 24/7.

  • Parasitology: investigates parasitic infections and detects blood, fat, viruses, inflammatory markers and toxins in stool. It also allows urinalysis, which incorporates chemical analysis and microscopy (Ext: 3048).
  • Bacteriology: provides a wide spectrum of tests including microscopy, culture and non-culture methods for detection and identification of bacteria and some viruses causing human pathogenic infections related to different body sites and organs. It also performs drug susceptibility testing to help in antimicrobial treatments. Services for fungal (Mycology) infections include the detection of different types of yeast and mold, and performing susceptibility test for yeast. Semen analysis and culture is also performed (Ext: 3049).

Clinical Hematology

This service includes automated and manual blood counts, bone marrow aspirate analysis, coagulation studies, identification of thalassemia and sickle cell carriers, as well as CSF and other body fluid analysis (Ext: 3043).

Blood Bank

The Blood Bank provides blood product compatibility testing and transfusion services, in addition to blood component therapy and therapeutic apheresis. It also offers a blood donor service that allows the performance of autologous/allogeneic blood collection, therapeutic phlebotomy and apheresis (Ext: 3039).

Reference Laboratories

We collaborate with highly specialized laboratories in Lebanon and abroad for special tests that are not made at our laboratory. These reference laboratories include: the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at AUBMC (Beirut), Unité de génétique médicale at USJ’s Faculty of Medicine (Beirut), and LABCO NOÛS Advanced Special Diagnostics (Inovie, Spain).
